We’ve all heard of snow days, but a unique move by the principal of the Bellingham Christian School to cancel classes for a "sun day," is a sure sign that the refreshing weather of spring is upon us.

While gray, overcast clouds typically hang over western Washington State in late March, the sparking sun that rose on Wednesday morning gave the principal of the private nondenominational Christian elementary school a novel idea, the Seattle Post Intelligencer reports.

For a while, western Colorado seemed recession-proof. The oil and gas industry thrived, unemployment was low and wages were good. Then the boom busted. The economy crumpled and families lost their homes to foreclosure leaving empty houses and apartments; shelters overflowed just as the coldest winter in eight decades swept in.

It was then that Mike Stahl, CEO of Hilltop Community Services, saw two pregnant women entering a shelter. When he realized that they would be forced to care for their newborns there, his heart ached.

Logan Davis, of Urbandale, Iowa, spent a Saturday afternoon last month ringing doorbells in his neighborhood and scurrying off to a patch of bushes to hide from view and watch his neighbors’ response.

But the 7-year-old wasn’t up to mischief—he was simply out to spread some cheer in anticipation of spring.

Logan spent a cold, gray day in late February taping bright yellow pieces of paper to his neighbor’s doors, which read "Spring is coming. Here is some early spring joy!" the Des Moines Register reports.

writing: Disabled Athlete Represents Homeland

Thirty-year-old Jasmin Bamburs recently became the first Serbian to compete in the international Paralympic Games in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Bamburs has been wheelchair-bound since he turned 20, but his disability didn’t stop him from competing with the Serbian Disabled Ski Team in several alpine racing events, CNN.com reports.

The athlete was motivated to compete in the rewarding event during a stay at the Shepherd Center, an Atlanta-based hospital. Here, Bambur underwent rehabilitation for his injury with sports specialist, Dan Humphreys.

Ben Kneller was pretty decent at basketball.

The six-foot-six forward/center captained his Westlake (California) High School team, leading it to the California Interscholastic Federation Division I playoffs, while earning all-league honors.

But he knew he wasn’t nearly good enough to play Division I college ball. He didn’t even bother trying out when he enrolled four years ago at San Diego State.
